I have read the French shock building guide that is linked to on the front page. In it the author puts some "green grease" on the bearing washer.
What is green grease? I presume it is additional lubrication for the piston rod. Is it adviseable to use some? Is there a substitute that I might have?
I am building an X10 but haven't got round to building the socks yet so a bit of help and advise would be greatly apreciated.

it's associated "green slime" probably. It's not necessary when building the shocks at all. You get the same benefit by soaking the washers and shock shaft in shock oil prior to assembling the shocks.

That's what I thought. Thanks a lot for the reply.

>:(Clearly I'm mentally or physically challenged (or both) but am I the only person who hates the shocks on these things? I can only assume that they are bottom fill shocks to stop the caps blowing off when landing from a jump. Heaven only knows why as its hardly a common occurence, I havn't seen it happen on any of the other brands. Has anyone found a suitable 'Tamiya' style replacement or has nobody even bothered looking?

Aren't almost all shocks bottom loading? Schumacher, Losi, Associated.. Probably so that you can get good access to the seals and piston rod guide. If they were accessible from both top and bottom I think that might lead to greater leak issues. Hey, I might be wrong - haven't given it much thought I've yet to service my X10 shocks, but i'm thinking that a decent pair of circlip pliars will be a good idea..

associated and Yoke shocks are top loading......
The shocks can be a nuisance to get used to, but if you build as per the manual then they work just fine - you just end up with excess oil all over the place whilst building/re-building the shocks.
as for replacing the shocks on an X10....that just wouldn't be cricket, as once you have built them correctly, they are spot on.

:)Cooper, I suppose its a question of what your used to, but so far out of the following makes that I've owned, Tamiya, Ofna, Traxxas, GS Racing & FG I can honestly say these are the crudest. All the others have been top fill shocks, none of which leaked and believe me the Ofna & GS Storm nitro buggies & FG Marder took some stick. Overall the buggy is excellent the vast majority of it seems very well thought out and then its let down (IMHO) with thngs that didn't get quite as much thought. A prime example of that being shock springs that are all the same colour, bar one, which is no use whatsoever when you've a limited amount of time to make any changes.

Hey Gramey, The shocks, I think aren't as bad as you are suggesting. They are similar to losis' cartridge style, just a different method. The aeration style shock, (top cap) and the cartridge style (losi type) have different caracteristics according to Losi Sr. Each have abenefit and a downfall. If I recall correctly, When Kyosho released the ZX-S kit in 1993, they had an option to build the shocks either way. That being said, I as well have owned a H.A.R.M., Associated, Losi, TTR, IRC, Jammin' and others, and I acutally found that barring the circlip and the messiness, they are the smoothest, and with the least parts count too! I have tred using several different style of shocks on the pred (including the new AE shocks with aeration holes) and haven't had a blowout yet. Bah, whatever, there just shocks!

Hi Gramey If you don't like the shocks or can't get them to work for you, you could change to another make (I was told TRF shocks are the best). However B4 you go & spend $50.00 on a set of TC shocks, allow me to tell you that I had some problems with mine from the get go. After looking into the problem I found that the O-ring & bearing(the plastic bit that holds the shaft inside the shock body) were all wrong, the shaft was too loose inside the bearing (it could wobble) and the O-ring was of the wrong material IMO. the new O-ring is translucent silicone and the bearing is now white instead of black, much tighter fit too. My kit came with the older stuff, so only a few runs were OK, B4 the leaking started, I wanted to change the shocks to TRF's. I have one of the first kits (#31). So I ordered the new bearings & O-rings, rebuilt the shocks and have not had any problem since. I'm glad I didn't buy the Tamiya shocks. Just my 2 cent .

I like the ttech shocks a lot, simple design that works without excessive seals and stiction.
Associated shocks though.............
But anyway coop if you look at my b4 in the gallery you will see i fitted the tcs2 associated top caps to my shocks which replace the standard cap with a bladder and double rebound foam, (you also get a shiney ally top cap). this makes them easier to build air free and to get equal lengths. I ran these all of last season and was very happy with them, you also avoid the leaks that are mostly caused by over fill and the shock packing up and pushing oil through the bottom seals.

hmmmm, I use Yokomo caps or modified B4 caps (with a bleedoing screw) on my B4 shocks, don't know what I would be without them
