been looking through some of the piccies of Paul Robinsons P8 on oople. Noticed in one of the pictures that he was running narrow front wheels. Presumably, these were cut down front wheels.
Does anybody know what the thinking behind this is? I presume it's to reduce steering or is there another reason that this would be done?

Those are slim front tyres (2wd fronts) stretched over standard front rims. The reason this is done is because the shape of a slim tyre gives a different tread pattern to a standard 4wd front schumacher spike and also the tyre walls are much stiffer as they are narrower so you don't get any tyre "flex" whilst cornering and the foorprint of the front tyre is narrower, all in all reducing front end grip (at least that's how its always felt to me when I've tried it). I don't recommend it unless you prefer understeer!

I asked it at the euro's and they always use 2wd tires on the front (his dad did the explaining), because 4wd's give to much steering, I also use 2wd's on the front on my astroturf hometrack. I think it was only at tiverton where they used normal front tires. The P8 has just ALOT of steering and that is why they did it....

I would have thought that stretching the tyres over a wide rim only increases the chance of the tyre coming off the rim during a race, due to the rubber trying to get back to shape, eventhough it is glued to the rim? I'll give it a try on Sunday and report back!

I have ran the car on wet grass with narrowed down front wheels fitted to the front end and standard width front wheels fitted to the rear end. The track (STONEHAVEN) was wet and the grass was a bit on the long side. The reduction in rolling resitance was significant. I had my highest qualifying position (A final6th) that year (circa 1997) with this set up.

I like the narrow tyres on the front alot, it gives me plenty of steering on the carpet, but it does have a tendancy towards power on understeer, which can be cured with a little work.

I was going to try this with some slim Yellow mini pins, but felt that they sat better on full width rims.

Never actually ran them in the end, ran spikes instead. I can't see that the wheel width would make much if any difference, the pins are still presented to the track in the same way.
May be different with slim mini spikes, I'll have to try.

these are slim mini pin's on normal front rims, still had to much steering but the X10 has less steering than a P8 I think my next try is slim mini spikes stretched and on cut wheels

Yeah, they look fine, just like the ones I mounted.
X10 doesn't have less steering when set up right Coop! ;D

Yeah.
On your track I'd probably run:
Copper springs all round. 30wt in the front. 45wt in the back. Front anti roll bar (red or copper - NOT purple)
I also might try minimum front caster (washers at the back of the top front wishbones).
Also add washers the the drive shafts (between bearing and drive disk) until it just fits in the box.
Try that Coop, sorry I promised you this last week! ;D
