Ok, I know it's not the 9's and 8's that all you guys run, ::)but our club rules only allow 19t spec motors for the indoor series.....seeing that I race 1/12th scales during the winter usually, I am not sure of where to start with the gearing...thinking of maybe around 24/25 with the kit spur?
any suggestions would be greatly received!

Hey Chris that's not enough info to go on if you want an educated answer.you neglected to mention length of straight,length of track, track surface type..... (another thing you could do is calculate roll-out for the x-10). take a look at the setup sheet from the kit & look at the two setups on either sides of the page, one is for carpet the other for polished floor. see how the final ratio is different, that's purely due to track surface(high grip Vs. low grip). hope this gives you a starting point: I would start with a lower number of teeth on the pinion & work my way up.

Hi Cliff - I was only looking for a suggested gearing point, hence the lack of information. I must say though, I have never geared an off-road buggy based on the mm/rev method, as I use with my 12th scale.
I have only ever geared to what feels right, giving good acceleration and top speed without cooking the motor. Maybe it's time that I got a little more scientific.
But, if it's any help, the track layout is, for a guide, usually; 30m straight with a mix between twisty in-field and short "blast" straights. It is reasonably high-grip carpet.
I ended up running on 23/73 gearing, but if I had one more qualifying session available, I would have geared down one more tooth to see if that was any better. I had good acceleration and a top-speed only around half a cars length slower than the fastest 2wd (if that makes sense).
The only bit i am finding odd, is that I also ran my 12 double on a 22 pinion. I am thinking that was overgeared as well now.

wow, 22t that seems a bit much. I run a 12x2 on 20t pinion and as far as i can see from the other cars on the track I'm not that slow [I can over take a lazer x5 that's got a velocity 5.5 on the short straights (in between corners if you know what I mean) on the main straight(30 meters+-) we are about the same top speed].this car is quite a rocket down the straight, I'm immensely chuffed with it. Chris if you have the "feel" for the correct gearing than it's just as good as doing roll out calculations, although if you run foams you'll have to compensate for wear... sounds like you had fun at the track. cliff

Just checked the numbers, a 20 is 8.91:1 a 22 is 8.10:1, not that bad.
I've been running a 12x2 on a 19 indoors (short tight track) but mainly so I don't have to skim it too much, I'm more interested in fiddling with the suspension at the moment! ;D

Cliff -we run indoors on rubber tyres, so there is no need to compensate for wear, as schumacher minipins already look quite worn when you first buy them!
The gearing felt OK, but as I said, one less tooth will be the starting point next time.
The very best bit of the track was the triple jump - just one cars length between the down slope and ramp on the next jump, total area to jump (if I was feeling brave) about 3.5 metres.....I was surprised just how well the car flew, it has really good poise in the air, and is easy(ish) to fly straight! ;D
