First let me say I don't race in the UK. so this should be confirmed by someone who does. I have the Novak velocity/gtb system in my X10. of the two systems available on the market at the moment [LRP (or Nosram if you prefer) & Novak] , you get more from Novak for your money, the fan & power capacitor basically. However if you are from the "blue is better"(red is better" in Nosram's case) club & would only have LRP (or Nosram) in your ride than get the 3 star motor & Sphere or competition Sphere(has no reverse but , has lower resistance=better performance). On the other hand the Novak has reverse and the better specs to start off with( and there is only one model of ESC). In my view the chose is simple , Novak with a 6.5 motor or if you are an accomplished driver go for the 5.5 motor.

I have had a Novak GTB with a 6.5 and 5.5 motor fitted in my X10. In my opinion the 6.5 is too slow for me, and the 5.5 is about right (is actually slightly quicker than the 9 x 2 I usually use).
However my GTB went back to Novak today under warranty and I am seriously considering buying an LRP Sphere Competition to use with the 5.5 while its being replaced as it will fit in the car much better. They are well cheap on Ebay at the moment.
DO NOT buy a Reedy brushless motor at the moment for use in the UK as they are not legal. All the others are I think. Check out the list on the BRCA web site.
Any more questions just ask.

Northy - i have just got a GTB with a 6.5 motor, the bit about it being too slow concerns me slighty.
I have not used mine at all yet, so what would you suggest the speed of the 6.5 is equal to?
If it's around an 11 then I will be fine, I can do enough damage to my car with an 11 in at the best of times!

I've since changed my mind a little.
At Bury Metro regional Jim had a 6.5 in his X10, I had a 5.5 in mine and someone else had a 4.5 in his BJ4. We got chance to run the cars side by side in practice. To my suprise there was very little difference in top speed down the straight. My X10 had more punch out of the corners than Jim's did, and the BJ4 with the 4.5 looked a little undriveable out of some corners.
I'd say the 6.5 should be fine, but when you get bored get a 5.5! ;D
Jim has a 5.5 aswell and hasen't felt the need to use it yet! He likes the 6.5 in the X10.

Hi Lads,
Brushless motors. How are they panning out for you guys? Are they really as reliable / maintenance free as promised? Do they compete well with the V2 motors on the track? Any thoughts regarding LRP vs Novak?
Apologies if this has been answered already, although I'd like to hear your latest thoughts..

Well here in the UK I have to keep removing my GTB for Nationals, but I will be re fitting it this week for the Regional this weekend. I will then be removing it again for the National the weekend after.
I would not be doing all that if there was no benefit! ;D
The 5.5 in my X10 is awesome! It has more grunt and top end than the Reedy KR 9 x 2 I used to use in it.

Ok, sounds cool. Any problems with overheating? Surely there will be nothing but brushless within a year or so? Then bring forth thy Lipo!
Cheers

No problems with overheating for me. I ran 10 mins of practice at Bury regional with only old 3300's in! I gear my Novak 5.5 on a 15 tooth pinion with the new 72 tooth spur. I think Jim runs a 16 tooth on his 6.5. He may well be along later to tell us. ;D Cheers, G

Hi all, I've been running the 6.5 @ 10.8 which is 17t pinion with 73 standard spur As yet I've had no overheating problems ;D The car is far faster than any of my brushed motors and I've only stripped the brushless motor twice to clean and reoil the bearings ;D I think my brushless set up has paid for its self in the last 8 months ;D Later Jimarea51

Wow, sounds pretty convincing! All you guys running brushless, do you think you could do me (and plenty of others) a favour and keep us updated on life with brushless? I'm really interested in what I think is the biggest single advancement since Schumacher invented the ball diff!
Cheers guys

Well my LRP Sphere just took a $*** on me. Got into a 15mph crash where there was no way at all the esc was touched and now the motor cogs. I can't even enter setup mode on the esc.
I asked both LRP and Novak about it (since Novak has FAR better customer service). Novak replied within a half hour (LRP still has't yet ofcourse, and probably won't for a couple weeks) and said "There is a chance that your ESC might have a bad power phase in it which could explain the strange cogging you are experiencing."
Not sure what a power phase it, but I think it means I'm out 200 dollars because I went against my instincts and bought blue instead of orange because it was smaller...
